What You Should Known About Trans Fat Labeling On Products
Defined Tag: Trans Fat Labeling. Discussion of trans fats is a big deal today. A number of products, especially snacks, often indicate that they contain zero trans fats. The implication is that these are a least a little better for you than other snacks. But is this necessarily the case? Here are a couple of things to think about as you notice products with trans fat labeling. While there is no doubt that any products that are prepared using less trans fats are missing some elements that are not all that great for your health, the fact is that there may be other elements added in that are just as bad. The reason is that the manufacturer may include other ingredients to enhance the taste that was lost when the trans fats were reduced. Salt is an excellent example. While everyone needs some salt in the diet, the addition of more salt to make up for the loss in flavor can have ill effects on your health in the long term. Check out the sodium content and compare it to products that do not advertise lower trans fats. You may be surprised at what you see. Second, some products that make a big deal out of having lower trans fats will also consider that attribute to be sufficient reason to up the price a bit. Depending on the overall quality of the product, it may or may not be worth the extra cost. In fact, if the product is a snack that is not all that good for you in the first place, then why not leave it off altogether? Go have a piece of fruit instead, or something else that is both cost effective and contains nutrients that you really do need, instead of empty calories. Trans fat labeling is a good thing, in that at least people who want to cut fat intake can consume the products and feel somewhat better about their diet. But don't assume that this labeling automatically makes the product a healthy food. Read all the parts of the label, then decide if you really want to include that food in your daily diet.
