Trans fat oil is a sneaky enemy of the heart and the body because many times people consume trans fat without even knowing it. Experts recommend cutting down the amount of fat we eat to avoid risks of heart disease and obesity, and many fats trans fats that are found in processed foods are often consumed without even being aware they were there.

Trans fats are naturally found in food and can also be created when liquid vegetable oils are processed into solids through hydrogenation. This type of trans fat is mostly found in margarine and shortenings that are often used when baking breads, bagels, cakes and other baked goods. They can also be found in soups and vegetable oil, and so when people think they are making a wise eating decision, often they are not because they are unaware of the trans fat content.

In order to cut back on consuming trans fat oil, you should choose wholesome foods that are not highly processed – things like fruits and vegetables and grilled lean meats like chicken. Cutting out snacking items like chips and buttered popcorn and instead snacking on things like nuts or dried fruits is an option. While bran muffins sometimes seem like a healthy option in the morning, they more than likely contain trans fat – eat oatmeal or porridge instead.

Since awareness of trans fat oils has become more popular, labeled foods now also have to state the trans fat content of their products. Many even advertise reduced trans fat, or trans-fat free. Reading the labels on the food you eat is essential to determining how much you should eat. You may be surprised to find out the trans fat content in some of the foods you thought were very healthy for you.

Cutting the trans fat oils out of your diet does not mean you have to eat boring foods all the time, but reducing your intake can lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and obesity. There are many varieties of foods available, sometimes all it takes is being aware of the contents you’re eating.
